Student Bursary Programme

T-REC provides small amounts of funding to individual undergraduate and postgraduate students in Ghana and Zimbabwe to undertake research on a blood transfusion related project. The students are from local universities and carry out research in a range of topics including medicine, science, media studies and the arts.

The aim is to broaden the range of available student research projects to include blood transfusion topics. The scheme will also bring university staff into close contact with the activities of the blood transfusion services and we hope that future research collaborations between the transfusion services and academic institutions will develop.

Examples of some of the bursary projects include:

  • The effectiveness of regular SMS reminders to encourage repeat voluntary blood donations
  • The relationship between superstition and blood transfusion
  • Evaluating the copper sulphate method of haemoglobin estimation for blood donors in Komfo Anokye teaching hospital
  • Screen for microfilaria in donor blood for transfusion in Northern part of Ghana
  • Screening and genetic diagnosis of alpha thalassemia in Ghanaian blood donors
  • Assess the effect of donor education on stock levels of blood and blood products.

Applications for bursaries are now closed.

“I hope T-REC will give researchers an opportunity to be well trained, to give them state of the art experiences

in training and research and help us improve our knowledge about blood transfusion locally.”
